Issue
I just bought a new HP laptop (intel core i5, 4GB RAM). I just downloaded linux mint 17 and made a bootable USB drive. When linux mint starts, it shows me a message: Running in software rendering mode. I'd like to solve what seems to be a driver issue before I install Linux mint. Thanks.
Solution
The linux mint bootable ISO includes very basic VGA support that is aimed at compatibility rather than performance. Because the OS from USB is only aimed at offering you a convenient way for maintenance tasks such as installing the OS, fixing HW issues, etc.
You should install Linux Mint by following the instructions provided here : http://www.linuxmint.com/documentation/user-guide/Cinnamon/english_17.0.pdf
you should not encounter this issue after installation and rebooting from the install partition.
Good luck!
